Catherine - June 2003

I was at WDW from June 8 - 11 with my mom. Here's some stuff about the trip...

The more I stay at the Animal Kingdom Lodge, the more I like it. If you're there and have time, try the Lodge Tour at 3:30. They'll show you some of the artwork. And I never miss Boma! We had a standard view room, and those are fine (we saw plenty of critters from the savanna overlooks) except that there weren't any animals to look at (not the 4-legged kind, anyway) while I sat on the balcony and talked to Lori on the cell phone. Oh, and when the Character Caravan bus drives through in the mornings...it's really LOUD!

The construction on the Beach Club Villas seems right on schedule. They look great! I should have bought more points.

Magic Kingdom got crowded by 12 noon. We were able to do a round on Buzz Lightyear, the Haunted Mansion, a show at the Diamond Horseshoe (Mom says the cowboy singer is excellent), the Timekeeper (that's new to me) and a circuit on the railroad. I got in rides on Splash and Big Thunder Mountains (Mom doesn't do mountains). I don't understand why people don't use fastpasses.

If you eat in the back room at the California Grill, and the MK fireworks happen to be at 9 PM, you can walk out on their observation deck and see the MK fireworks, then turn around and see Illuminations. No music though. I liked Illuminations better! Then, the water parade comes by.

The Animal Kingdom annual passholders lounge (in Pizzafari) is nice, but remember: it has no air conditioning! If you can stand that, drop in for a brisk (and free) game of Whack An Alien. My personal best is 59, not even near the high score of 76. No free drinks here, but there's water.

Illuminations is great from Germany! And you get to see the Tapestry of Whatever It Is Called Now twice, since one parade ends in Germany and the other begins in Germany.

On Saturday June 8, I got adopted by the regulars at the Adventurers Club. Go figure. My Dream Team of cast members was working ... but they were all playing the wrong parts. Oh well, maybe next time.

The Food Lowdown: Day 1 - Boma (soup of the day - chicken coconut curry - that's for you, Lori) and overpriced beer at the AdvClub; Day 2 - breakfast at Boma (swiss cheese & grilled veggie omelet, Frunch juice, really tasty!), ate too much for lunch, dinner at California Grill (goat cheese ravioli, vegetarian platter, chocolate banana bread pudding with caramelized bananas and banana rum ice cream, a house zinfandel, dropped big bucks, saw lots of fireworks), Day 3: Skipped breakfast (yeah, with Mom there and everything), Lunch at Columbia Harbor House (split fish & chicken basket), raspberry Cokes over at Beaches & Cream while looking at the villas, dinner at San Angel Inn (Aztec soup, nachos for 2, margaritas big enough to swim in); Day 4 - breakfast at Tusker House (big cinnamon roll, chocolate milk), lunch at Mara (split tandoori chicken pizza and tomato bisque soup)
